DMV Dance Community Update


Hey yall, this is Kimbers from DC letting you all know what’s going on in the DC/MD/VA area in the dance community this week!

Thursday, February 19th
Culture Shock DC Company Class
Jemuel “JV” Valencia is teaching Culture Shock, DC’s Company Class. JV is a principal dancer and choreographer for Culture Shock, DC, former director of Major Definition, and member of TitoBoyScouts Crew.

Class is held at CityDance Center at Strathmore from 8:30pm to 9:45pm for $15. Please see the CSDC website for more details.

Have a Heart, Save a Life
A Celebration of Life & Art in Support of Suicide Prevention.  Culture Shock, DC and DCypher Dance will be performing to support suicide prevention at the Rock & Roll Hotel at 8pm.

Friday, February 20th

Black Expressions Hip Hop Festival
Co-Presented by Mason/Rhynes productions, Dance Place’s 6th annual Hip Hop Festival will be presenting performances Capital Movement Project, Aysha Upchurch/Life Rhythm Move Project, DCypher Dance, and Live in Color and Boogie Bots from America’s Best Dance Crew.

The festival continues from Friday to Sunday.  Please see the Dance Place website for more details.

Saturday, February 21st

Major Definition Auditions
UMBC’s resident Hip Hop Dance Troupe is hosting auditions for their Spring season!  They have competed and performed up the east coast and shared the stage with teams like Team Millennia, the Jabbawockeez & Boogie Bots. No dance experience is required!

Auditions will be held at UMBC’s Fine Arts 317 at 10:00 am. Please see the facebook event for more details.

23rd Annual Jazz & Tap Dance Festival
The Dancin’ Unlimited Jazz Dance Company is dedicated to bring the art of jazz dance to their audiences & this year is presenting a showcase of Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop.  Participating groups include Encore Performers, MetroTap, Synergy Hip Hop Dance Inc., and Future Shock, DC.

The festival is having two performances that Saturday at 8pm and a matinee on Sunday the 22nd at 4pm at the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.  Please see the Dance Unlimited website for more details.

    Other than our Culture Shock dance classes we are offering a professional summer intensive at CityDance Center at Strathmore where students ages 18 and up will spend a week beginning June 22 with our professional dance company taking class, learning some great pieces. More info:
