Rhode Island Competition: BattleGroundz

Not much can be said about competitions outside of the major hubs (NY, NJ, CA, Boston, etc.) and the HHDA circuit.  However, a new competition has surfaced in an unknown but growing dance community – Rhode Island.

The “Evil Unruly Epsilon Upsilon Chapter” of Iota Theta Phi Fraternity, Inc. at Rhode Island College is hosting BattleGroundz, one of the first major competitions (in recent memory) geared towards local groups from Rhode Island.  Local groups Draztik, Check This, Aesthetic Flo, Phaymus Jr., Dexter’s Lab, Ataxia, & imPulse Dance Company are confirmed for the competition.

Grand prize is $1500.

The event is at Sapinsey Hall, Rhode Island College, on Sunday, October 25 from 8-10 PM. Admission is $5 presale, $7 at the door. If ANYONE from the Central New England area is reading this, you need to come through.  It’s not everyday that you see the rebirth of a dance community…

Details are here @ the Facebook event.

Boston: The Bulletproof Fubes Project

Elements is less than a month away, but New England isn’t waiting until then for insane events.  Four of Boston’s well-established groups – Bulletproof Theory, Fusion, Vibes, and Unofficial Project have come together as “The Bulletproof Fubes Project” – get it?

Whoever came up with this name is a genius.

They will be hosting a series of FREE workshops at the SAC Dance Studio at Boston University this Saturday.  Anyone who can’t wait until Elements for their dance fix should definitely come check this out.

Details are here @ the Facebook event.

SKOOL DISTRICT

Last weekend, I got the opportunity to go see World of Dance at San Mateo. There were two teams that stood out to me: V.I.P. (repping San Jose; directed by Krisuan Rosales) who placed 2nd, and SKOOL District (directed by Jay Chris Moore) who placed 3rd –Poreotics took first. Both these teams, however, provided the HYPE and SWAG that a lot of the audience was craving for that day.

Although SKOOL District was announced as an LA area team, Jay Chris’s project actually SPANS 4 AREAS (including and outside of LA) across the United States as “Academees.” As the next level towards his first conception of THE ACADEMEE, which was a project to attempt to make it onto America’s Best Dance Crew, Season 4; the idea further evolved as different “academees” were created.

  • ACADEMY OF VILLAINS (SAN MATEO)
  • ACADEMY OF HYPE (HAWAII)
  • ACADEMY OF SWAG(LOS ANGELES)
  • ACADEMY OF PHR3SH ( PHILADELPHIA )

Yes, my dudes. PHILLY is on the map thanks to collaborative contributions from PHR3SH SELECT. So next time you see SKOOL DISTRICT, east coast…show them some love, because they’re reppin our coast (as well as  west coast, and the “pacific”). –Now that’s real east meets west love.

KNOW YOUR RIVALS

(You can also tell which academee is which from the song selections).

Project D Presents… JET LI

So why are we posting up info about a west coast dancer on an east coast blog? Besides the fact that an east coast team is hosting him… JUSTIN “JET LI” VALLES (of Culture Shock, LA, Poreotics, and Funny Bones Crew) is actually a New Jersey native. Raised in Old Bridge, NJ, Justin and his sister Jenny Valles (known for her affiliations with Kaba Modern and Homeland) moved out to the west coast a couple of years back. Known for his infamous battles against Mike Song and Tony Tran at Mavyn’s In the Spotlight series, Jet Li has managed to accumulate a decent fan base for anyone that follows him. Although his style is true west coast flava, deep down inside Justin still has a piece of the NJ inside him.

Justin will be teaching this Monday from 5-7PM at Step By Step for Project D’s special ONE DAY WORKSHOP.
